The Monastery, Gorton

The sensitive refurbishment and extension of this Grade II listed building now provides an enhanced visitor experience.  The capital works project included the development of a two storey extension of the main Monastery building to complete the front wing and enclose the Cloisters and garden space. Also within the project were repair and restoration works of historic elements within the nave.

KEY INFORMATION

Specific aims and objectives of the project were to:

  • ‘Share the Story’ of The Monastery’s rich historical and architectural journey and current cultural role through the development of bespoke visitor interpretation programme.
  • Continue the conservation of the Monastery through repairing a range of building fabric and artefacts currently at risk.
  • Improve access to the building through the development of a new front wing, visitor entrance and associated facilities to allow for the co-location of leisure and corporate visitors.

St Mary’s Churchyard Project

Appleyard & Trew are appointed as Quantity Surveyors by the London Borough of Southwark on the £6 million revitalisation of the existing park. The park is 55 hectares in total and this project represented phase 1 of an overall masterplan programme for the park.

The new works comprised complete restoration of the existing park and included:

  • Granite paving
  • Fountain water feature and pond
  • Bespoke curved wall
  • Street furniture
  • Soft landscaping
  • Resin bound paving

 

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
• Winner of the BALI National Award in category “Mainly Hard Landscaping Construction”
• Phase 1 – Rearrangement and revitalisation of Children’s Play area
• Phase 2 – Rearrangement and revitalisation of adjacent park access routes and associated landscaping works.

Headstone Manor and Museum

Located at Pinner View, Harrow, the site is listed as a Scheduled Monument and subject to restrictions. Sensitive restoration works were carried out over 2 phases and included the Great Tithe Barn, Grade II listed building.   A number of other buildings occupying the site were also repaired and restored transforming the site into a permanent museum with function rooms for use at events such as weddings and community uses, generating long term revenue for the museum.

CRISIS SKYLIGHT 

Crisis Skylight is an award winning and dynamic education, training and employment centre for the homeless and vulnerably housed people.  It offers practical and creative workshops in an accessible and inspiring environment together with formal learning opportunities that lead to qualifications and can help people to find work.  Appleyard & Trew were delighted to be appointed as Project Manager, Quantity Surveyor and CDM on the refurbishment of their existing building in Commercial Street, London.
